Well here we are at the start of a new year and the beginning of a new century, the 21st. How lucky we are to have been born in this epoch and to live through this historic piece of time.

We start the new year with a story on Rancho El Guajillo located about 8 to 10 miles south to southwest of San Diego in Duval County. I would like to thank Mrs. Celia Torres of El Guajillo, J.J. Hinojosa of Alice, and Baldemar Garcia of Corpus Christi all growing up as young children in El Guajillo for their help in obtaining information for the story. An extra thanks to Mrs. Torres for providing a photo of Antonio Sáenz that I could photograph and some historical facts on this Civil War veteran who made El Guajillo his home after the war.

Find out about an organization that is doing something for the ranch worker of today and yesterday, The South Texas Heritage Rodeo Association, which has their annual fanfare as part of the South Texas Ranching Heritage Festival in Kingsville.

Natalia S. Lopez of San Diego relates to us how she came about to knowing some long lost relatives that led to a future family reunion.

Read about a new non-profit organization in Alice that is trying to establish a museum for Tejano Music Stars in Tejano R.O.O.T.S.

Ernesto Garza Sáenz explains to us in our Mexico section about a castle that existed outside of Cd. Camargo that belonged to General José María de Jesús Carvajal. An interesting story because the castle no longer exists.

Be sure to check out our regular departments for some other interesting stories of South Texas.

I would like to welcome all of our new readers to El Mesteño and say thank you to all of our faithful readers and subscribers and especially our advertisers for supporting us into the new year and new century.

Hasta el próximo año,

Homero S. Vera
