May is the month in which we observe Memorial Day, that day set aside in memory of U.S. servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It is fitting that our main story this month is on Eligio R. Escobar, a U.S. Army veteran and a musician/composer who wrote a song called "El Veterano" in which he honored veterans of World War II.

J. Luz Sáenz, who we featured last month, a World War I vet, would have been proud to have heard this song. I also dedicated a section to veterans that lost their lives that I personally knew while growing up and an uncle whom I never got to know, only in stories. May God be with them.

Ever wanted to design your own coat of arms? Well you can! Check out the story on page 10 and the internet link in our link section for more info.

Welcome back Nick! Nick Gonzales, our contributing writer, writes an interesting article about our Latino ancestors who were Jews.

I attended a one day conference on the controversial diary of Lt. Col. Enrique de la Peña, an officer in Gen. Santa Ana's army during the Battle of the Alamo. The controversy is because he states that David Crockett and six others were captured and then executed, ending the myth of Davy going down swinging his rifle. A very interesting conference with leading historians and experts on archival records presenting their papers. The highlight of the conference was a documentary film by filmmaker Brian Huberman, who produced an excellent film.

We have a new contributing writer in Corky Rubio of San Antonio who writes about "that old time religion" growing up in Eagle Pass, Tx.

José G. Garza sends us his beautiful prose on behalf of his departed wife.

Be sure to check out our regular departments and welcome to all new readers and subscribers.

We thank our advertisers for their continuing support. I'd also like to thank all persons who have bought books that we recommend.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
