Volume 2, Issue 19

Our main feature this month is Rancho Los Braziles in Brooks County, Texas founded by José Anastacio Barrera in 1878. The cover photo was taken at Los Braziles in 1936. Some of the people in the photo are: vaquero to far left leaning on corral is Felix Barrera, vaquero on horseback in middle of photo is Sixto Barrera, vaquero on far right on horseback is Luis Gonzalez, and the small boy by the corral is Hector Barrera. I thank Mike Barrera for providing this photo. I also want to thank Mrs. Berta Chapa for providing valuable information on Los Braziles that had been prepared by her late husband, Hector Barrera. Los Braziles has been in continuous operation for well over 100 years.

This month's agostadero relates to Los Braziles because it is part of the original Spanish and Mexican land grant, Palo Blanco del Charco Redondo. We explain how the first settlers claimed the Charco and how it developed.

The cattle brand section relates to ranchers from neighboring counties that came to Duval County to register their brands.

Read the story on the Mireles', long time educators in the Corpus Christi School District and about a group that has formed to promote naming a school in Corpus Christi after them.

Ernesto Garza Saénz, cronista (historian) of Camargo, writes about the founding of Camargo 250 years ago this past March 5.

Take a look at a young new talented Tejano group from Benavides, Texas called Xklusivo in our music section.

In our Mexico section we have the conclusion of the Muster Role of the Compania Volante in Nuevo Santander 1780. A great list for genealogists and historians.

Please check our regular departments and welcome to all new readers of El Mesteño and thanks to all our regular readers.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
