Volume 2, Issue 20 |
Our main feature this month is on General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, native son of Goliad, Texas and hero of the battle Cinco de Mayo in Puebla, Mexico. Our sources for information were The Handbook of Texas Online and a copy of La Libertad Newspaper printed on May 5, 1906 in San Diego, Texas by editor-publisher, Don Francisco P. de Gonzalez. Be sure to read the speech that Zaragoza gave his troops right before the battle that might have been a deciding factor in the victory. This month's agostadero is on La Encantada and Encino del Pozo. Also read the story related to the actual survey made of those two land grants. The cattle brand section relates to ranchers from the village of Concepción in southern Duval County, 1876-1882. Be sure to read the article on Alfonso "Poncho" Gonzalez, three-time American Paint Horse Association national horse racing champion breeder and trainer while at La Perla Ranch, southeast of Premont, Texas. Nick Gonzales contributes a fine patriotic article for Memorial Day on two families from Falfurrias, Texas who had seven sons in the military. In our music section we feature a young Tejano group that hails from California but with roots in Texas. They are called Tercera Generacion. In our Mexico section, Don Ernesto Garza Saénz, cronista (historian) of Camargo, concludes his article on Camargo celebrating 250 years. Check out our recipe section where Ms. Nona B. Garcia sent us some delicious recipes for everyone to try out. We have already tried the chicken spaghetti and it was great. If you have a recipe to share please send it to El Mesteño so that everyone can enjoy it. Be sure to read our regular departments and thanks to all our subscribers, readers, and advertisers. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
